General Electric

The General Electric plant in Schenectady is a local landmark. Once, and perhaps even still, GE was the largest single employer in the city. Today, many of the buildings at the plant have been razed for tax reasons, and much of the work is now done elsewhere.

This building is the Large Steam Turbine & Gas building. It's located right alongside Interstate 890. Or should I say that I-890 was located alongside the plant? Inside this building, Schenectady workers build steam turbines that are used in power plants all over the world. If you drive by at night in the summer, when the big door are open, often you can see some of the behemoths being built inside.

General Electric

Taken from the car as we were driving west on I-890. This is the GE main plant in Schenectady, the iconic building on a rainy day. That sign is illuminated with hundreds, maybe thousands of individual light bulbs, and they are changed around this time of year to a red - white - green scheme for the holidays. I'm going to try to get a photo at night if it ever stops raining...

Erie Blvd at Erie St

The famous General Electric sign. This is the Schenectady General electric Main Plant. At night, the sign is illuminated.

The rumour is that Erie Blvd used to be a branch of the Erie Canal, now paved over. It's certainly wide enough to be true. This view is a block south of State Street, looking south, away from the downtown business district.

Erie Blvd has many businesses on it. I got this photo after eating lunch at State & Erie: Bangkok Bistro. Excellent food and wonderful staff. I had beef Basil curry and my beloved had the Bistro Duck. Both were excellent!

I liked the imagery of the lamp posts marching off toward GE... or is it marching from GE?
