Red, white and... blue?

OK, so the ripe mulberry fruit is purple.  It's a really, really dark blue!  This particular specimen stands outside my front door, in exactly the same spot where an old maple tree stood.  I don't know how this one got started - I'm guessing it was a bird.  No silkworms though.

Mulberries

When we moved into the house, there was a very large, very old maple tree in front.  It was close to the end and soon died.  The power company cut it down before the dead limbs could bring down the power lines.  There was a bare stump there for a few years, and then this tree began to grow.  It's a mulberry tree, probably growing from seeds left by a bird.

Well it's ten years on and that mulberry tree is tall and it has a lot of fruit on it!  Not only do the birds like it, but the neighbours (and their kids) do too!  It's not uncommon to see 4 or 5 kids and a grownup or two picking the berries off the tree.  They aren't overly sweet, but they're pretty nice when fully ripe.  The only thing that's missing are the silk worms!

Mulberries

When we moved here, there was a large maple tree in front of the house.  It got very old and the power company took it down before it snagged the power lines down.  Several years passed, and this spindly thing began growing out of the stump.  It turned into a beautiful mulberry tree!

This is typical of this time of the year.  Full, green foliage and berries in every stage of maturity.  All of us eat the berries right off the tree, and it's encouraging to see neighbours walking past picking them too.  A beautiful and useful tree!
