Very Important Person

A VIP was in Albany yesterday, US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. He was in the area to promote the 'Race to the Top' awards. That's a Federal program where the states compete against each other to win Federal money. That sounds crass but it's not easy to explain in a short blog posting.

New York State was awarded something on the order of $700 million.

Secretary Duncan has been taking the bus as part of his 'Back to school' tour.

That's the spot!

Our Swissy has a few favourite places on her typical walk route where she drops and rolls onto her back, wriggling along the grass. It must feel good, because she spends a good 5 minutes or so if we leave her to her own devices.

She's a good dog.

Hello world!

The rain stopped and these micro puddles were beckoning...

Skywatch Friday

The Moon seems so far away.

When I was a boy, I was thrilled by the astronauts walking on the Moon, but I must confess that I always had the deepest respect for Michael Collins, the man who was all alone orbiting the Moon when Armstrong and Aldrin were down there. Most people remember the 12 who walked, but not the 15 who orbited...

Rain drop

Nestled in the leaves of my hedge, the biggest drop is about 1/4 inch in diameter. So tiny, and yet in their billions, trillions, they fill the rivers and oceans.

Autumn rain?

It's been raining continuously for over 30 hours. After the long dry spell, it's impossible not to think that the autumn rain has begun. The outside temperature is 64F / 18C and I had to close some of the house windows last night to keep out the chill.

Of course we still have another few weeks of summer, but this view from inside the car is a reminder of the next season on the menu.

The National Weather service predicts a 100% chance of rain today. I won't be taking the motorcycle to work!

Rainy flower

Having a bit of rain today but this flower doesn't seem to mind one bit.

Skywatch Friday

I try to bring my camera with me all the time, but sometimes I don't bother. The little one wanted to try out his new toy boomerang, so we went to an open space nearby to play for a bit. Of course it gets dark sooner this time of year, and we walked home in the twilight. I wish I had my camera, but the mobile phone image isn't too bad.

Patriot Guard Riders

When people hear 'large group of motorcycles' they don't often think that something good is about to happen. Well the Patriot Guard Riders want to change your mind. These bikers attend the funerals of servicemembers and former servicemembers when invited by the family.

This photo was taken at the Albany Airport, where US Army Air Corps pilot 1st Lt Ray Fletcher flew for the last time. He was lost over Corsica, 10 May 1944 and the crash was in such rugged terrain that the Army didn't think they could get the crew's remains out. So they stayed there until 1989, when a Corsican police officer located the wreckage. That set off an investigation and an excavation followed by DNA testing.

Lt Fletcher will be buried in Essex Center, VT. Albany is the nearest large airport, and so the Army flew him here, where his hearse was escorted by these men, the Patriot Guard Riders. It's about a 3 hour ride there and another 3 hour ride back. There were at least a hundred motorcycles waiting to go.

Tomato in pot

Scorched but still strong, this tomato plant is producing fruit at a slow but steady rate. I think the squirrels got one of the fruits but they don't seem to like the taste all that much so most of the tomatoes are still intact. I wish I had room to grow a real vegetable garden, but pots work in a pinch.

Dawn's early light

Taken from my upstairs window. The screens are all in; that's the pattern superimposed on the image. It's what I see during the summer. It was hot last night and cool this morning. Soon, I'll have to close some of those windows at night and then I won't hear the birds in the early morning light. Autumn is close.

The sun is peeping over the trees behind me, just lighting up the tops of the trees in front of me; the near ones still in shadow. The promise of day, renewed again.

Skywatch Friday

The heat wave broke last night, and with the cooler weather came these light clouds. It's dark in the distance, but that's passing quickly.

Lake George

This is the lower end of Lake George as seen from the ramparts of Fort William Henry, in the village of Lake George, NY. It's pretty typical of a summer day on the lake, hot, hazy and tourists parasailing.

This is probably the tourist spot for the eastern half of the Adirondacks. Million Dollar Beach, boat rides - the Lake George Steamship Company operates a paddle-wheel steamboat named Minne-Ha-Ha! Minnehaha is the lover of Longfellow's fictional Hiawatha. There was a real Hiawatha, and he co-founded the Iroquois League, centred mostly here in upstate NY.

Nona Hendryx in Central Park

More accurately, the crowd listening to Nona Hendryx. Central Park has a summer music series at the Music Haven, which is what this informal amphitheater is called. There's a stage for the musicians, and the people sit on the hillside. There is some seating (in actual seats!) close to the stage for those who arrive early.

I would have gone round he front for a photo of the singer, but we were walking the dog, and she wasn't too interested in moving closer to the loudspeakers! Since the dog weighs a hundred pounds, when she decides she's moving off, we generally move with her!

Nona still has an awesome voice, wow.

Esperance

The view of the farmland from the Landis Arboretum in Esperance, NY. Half an hour from the middle of the city and it's the most beautiful rural setting. One of the great things about living upstate.

Baby dragonfly

Just emerging from the larval stage, his wings are still crumpled up from being packed in. He's resting in the sun, pumping blood through the veins in the wings to straighten them out, and harden them.

Taken at the Landis Arboretum in Esperance, NY. They not only have a beautiful area to walk and hike, but they also sponsor educational programs. George Steele took us on a herpetology adventure (reptiles and amphibians.) We didn't see any snakes, but we did see several amphibians including two species of salamander and several stages in the frog life cycle.

Oddly enough, insects were wildly popular even though we were looking for amphibians!

Hans Groot's Kill

Don't be alarmed at the name! 'kill' is a Dutch word meaning creek or stream. Schenectady was settled by the Dutch in the 1600s, so we have quite a few Dutch place names.

This stream flows through the grounds of Union College. I couldn't find an old enough map to see where it originally flowed. Today, its source and terminus are covered over by the city. All that's exposed is a small bit to the north and east of the college. The stream is part of Jackson's Garden, but I wasn't quite far enough west to be there. This was taken just off of Lenox Rd. There isn't any real access, no parking or anything, just an embankment next to the bridge that carries Lenox Rd over the Kill, worn by decades of people walking down to this vale.

the Kill is. and below is a close-up:
I was going to embed a Google map, but Google have done something and I can't get an embed link. Computers are supposed to make our lives easier, right?

This is the Google map: http://goo.gl/maps/nJfV

I used Jing to capture the image of the Google map and add the arrows, so you can see where the stream hides among the trees. It reappears on the other (left) side of the parking lot, into Jackson's Garden.

A touch of the tropics

Well, maybe not as tropical as I'd like, but I could not resist this thatched umbrella in Warrensburg, NY. Warrensburg is in the north country of NY state, up in the Adirondack Mountains. The signs for the calzones and pizza are more familiar than the umbrella, and seeing the little 'pizza guy' there just made the shot for me.

We have a pretty short riding season here, so when the weather is good, the bikers are out riding (or stopping for some pizza). And there is some very beautiful country to ride through up there!

Rosebud

Central Park's Rose Garden. This was what I was going to post for the theme day photo but I thought it might not be bright enough.

Dragonfly

The little guy is fascinated with these insects, and he not only catches them to observe them closely (then releasing them again) he insists that I take some photos.

They are very interesting creatures, that's for sure. I like dragonflies too, because they eat mosquitoes!

Central Park fountain

We don't get many rainbows up in the sky, but low sun and a spray of water bring the rainbows down to us!

Theme Day - Bright colours

On the first of the month, many in the City Daily Photo community post a photo that represents a given theme. This month, the theme is Bright colours. Click here to view thumbnails for all participants

I am looking forward to seeing everyone else's photos. I found this particularly difficult. For one thing, I don't exactly have a photographer's eye and the only thing I could think of as colourful was flowers. I've posted rather a lot of flowers, although there's one in particular I would have reserved if only I'd known what the theme would be.

I looked round the house, the neighbourhood and the city for something bright, and it all seemed either green or concrete! The nature of living here, and not say, Hawai'i. I settled on this photo of some construction equipment that was in the neighbourhood to work on a natural gas pipe leak. It's (somewhat) bright and it shows the nature of the neighbourhood (a bit).

Do visit the rest of the photographers; there are so many wonderful photos from so many places!
