Alternate focus

I was trying to get a photo of the cleaner shrimp in the marine fish tank (that pinkish blob to the right of center) but the autofocus wasn't cooperating.  I thought I'd deleted them all but I guess not.  Upon closer inspection of this straggler, I see that Huck the cat is steadfastly watching over the front flower patch in case any squirrels try any funny business.

Theme Day - Tranquility

On the first of each new month, the City Daily Photo community choose a theme, and we try to post a photo that we feel realises that theme.  This month's theme is tranquility. Click here to view thumbnails for all participants - the participants are from all over the world, and their ideas are simply marvelous!

This is from the wood next to the soccer field we go to.  The soccer field is on the edge of Central Park, and there is a mountain bike path that runs through here.  There are streams and bridges over those streams, although I think I might have rode my bike over that when I was younger I don;t think I would do so today!  Anyway, soccer practice was over, the kids were all heading for the cars and it was quiet.  The air was still and I could hear the birds in the forest, the slow trickle of the water, the voices of the children, glad to be finished with their workouts.

Tara Kitchen

Tara Kitchen has recently opened downtown on Liberty Street.  We've become friends with the owners Aneesa and Muntassim (I hope I spelt that right - I've only ever heard them spoken!) through their presence at the Greenmarket.  Lovely people, wonderful food.  They're not at the Greenmarket during the summer; they have lunch hours at their own place now.  Of course I couldn't resist.  I had a lamb merguez that was bubbling hot and lovely.  The lamb was perfect and I think I'll be having that again.  This photo was taken as I sat at the long counter in the front of the restaurant.  I couldn't resist the beautiful shapes, colours and reflections.

If you're in the Schenectady area, drop in and sample this marvelous cuisine!  I have no financial interest in the restaurant; I'm just enthusiastic about a new small business opening in the city.

Lottery Building

This is the NY State Lottery Building, as seen at the back entrance to Proctors Theatre.  The day was cold but the shining sun makes it bearable.  I liked the sky reflecting off of the windows and took it on an impulse.

One Broadway Center

I liked the reflection of the sky and the trees.  This is One Broadway Center, another recent addition to the downtown landscape.

It stood vacant for a while, then the New York State Lottery moved in, taking five floors.  They have their name emblazoned on the front of the building which is why pretty much everyone knows this as the Lottery building.

This view is from the back, in the Proctor's Theatre parking lot.  The smaller structure on the left is the municipal parking garage, across Broadway.

Street, reflected

The lighting was just right to capture the street in my son's car window. I really like playing with reflections but I'm not very good at it yet.

Where's Waldo?

Down in Vale, there's a turtle sunning himself on the log. His sunbathing companion slipped into the water so smoothly there's no ripple to show it!

I'm very fortunate to live is a big city and still be so close to nature.

Theme Day - Reflections

On the first day of every month, many in the City Daily Photo community post a photograph that realises a particular theme. This month, the theme is Reflections. Click here to view thumbnails for all participants

No particular art from me - this is a straightforward photo of my oldest son's car after a thunderstorm rolled through. The sky in the reflection is dark while the sky overhead is light - it made for a very clear reflection.

If you like reflections, James at Newtown Daily Photo runs a Weekend Reflections theme where you can see close to a hundred photos of reflections each and every weekend; many from people outside the CDP community, so you can see photos from new people as well as familiar names. It's another very cool community of very nice people.

I know there are fish in here...

A late afternoon visit to our Central Park's Iroquois Lake. Someone is on the look out for sunfish, which nest in the shallows and can often be seen by quietly peering over the edge.

Weekend Reflection

I'm away from the computer, but I thought I'd submit a reflection photo anyway. Thanks James, for this wonderful theme!

Ducks

Late afternoon and the sun is shining on 'The Casino'. That building has been called the Casino all my life, and I've seen post cards of it looking much the same from the 1930s, but I never remember any gambling going on there. It's always been hot dogs and ice cream; that sort of thing. One can rent a paddleboat there, too.

We've had a heat wave, and the lake is shallow, so the water warmed up quickly. The aquatic plants have really been growing, so the surface of the water is dotted with the tops of them.

After the rain

Raindrops on a blade of grass after the storm passed. The reflections in the drops were accidental but I liked how they came out.

James at Newtown Area Photo is hosting a collection called Weekend Reflections. Have a look at the marvels people find!

Frog

There's a bullfrog poking his head out of the water here. It might seem like Where's Waldo? but I guess that's the point of natural camouflage! He's still young. I hope he eats lots and lots of those bugs that have recently hatched!

James at Newtown Area Photo runs a Weekend Reflections collection. It's amazing what people can do with a common theme! Click the link to go see... Thanks, James!

Vale pond

Took a hike into Vale yesterday. I'd normally say 'walk' but yesterday it was a hike. Between the snow and the mud, it was slow going. But it was so worth it! Down at the bottom, late in the afternoon, this beautiful sight magically appeared. I was standing in shadow; the other side was bathed in sunshine, the dark water was perfect to reflect the far bank.

Which qualifies this for a Weekend Reflection! Thanks to James for hosting this very interesting meme.

Street pond

Last week we had our first big snow storm of the season. People to the south of us (New York City, Washington DC, even Louisiana!) got snow but the major storms missed us until now. It's hard for the city to find a place to put the snow, so a lot of it ends up on the corner, out of the frame to the right.

It being late February, it warmed up above freezing, so the next storm dropped rain on us instead of snow. With the snow bank taking up a whole lane of the street, it was pretty difficult for the water to get past it. So it sat there. Here, actually, in my driveway.

It turns out that the angle I was at made for an interesting reflection, which qualifies this for inclusion over at Weekend Reflections. Thanks to James for continuing this very interesting series!

Just started

The news has been filled with the plight of the people in Washington DC and Virginia. They got quite a lot of snow and unlike us, don't have the equipment to deal with it. Up here, we've had very little snow this year. A storm is moving through today and tonight though, and the forecast is for 6 inches (15cm) by tomorrow morning. That's pretty easy for us to handle; especially since we don't have high snow banks.

The snow started minutes before I took this photo. I wanted some way to show the snowfall but quickly realised it's not as easy as it sounds to capture snow falling! I took this by pointing the camera at a black car's door so the snow would show up. It isn't what I wanted, but I thought it was an interesting effect.

House reflected by the minivan

Taken this afternoon - I was stuck for inspiration when it found me! I was trying to get a photo of the little one and he shut the van door. This was way better than what I would have taken by myself!

My friend in Versailles told me about the Weekend Reflections fans; this is my first real submission there. Late, of course, and the title of my blg is wrong. Hopefully I'll get it straightened out the next time I post :-)

Reflection

A very quiet place and very still water. This is a stream, and we haven't had rain in a few days, so it's a little low and not running very fast. Perfect for a still-life portrait.

And reflection.
