Weekend Reflections

This is an old photo, taken 23 Sep 2011 in the parking lot where I work.  I meant to post it earlier but never got my act together.  Today, the yellow trees are all bare and the green trees are red.  Autumn is such a dynamic time of year; things change almost daily.

We are forecast to get several inches of snow today and 4 more tonight, which made me reflect on the dynamic nature of the season (and to find this photo!)  So many trees still carry most of their leaves.  6 inches of snow on them is going to be a very heavy load.  Many limbs will break, undoubtedly causing electric power outages over a wide area.  In a strange bit of fortune, we had a heavy autumn snow just a few years ago, so many weak limbs were remove then, which means fewer limbs will fall on power lines today.  We didn't think of it as fortunate when it happened!

Yellow flowers in bloom

I have this... theory, I guess I'd call it. It seems to me that the flowers that bloom are grouped by colour. So, one moment most of the blooms will be yellow, the next moment, blue, the next, white. I haven't any idea how accurate this is - it just seems that at the moment, yellow is a predominant colour.

The flowers in the foreground come from my mother-in-law. She calls them Japanese Buttercups, but Google doesn't know about them. I think I trust my mother-in-law more than Google, so Japanese Buttercups is what I'll refer to them as. They are very vigourous - they seem to expand every year. This lot started out as one plant!

In the background are yellow coreopsis. Google tells me that the name comes from the Greek word meaning bedbug, of all things. Apparently, the Greeks thought the seeds looked like bedbugs. Who knew? These flowers seemed to spread for a few years, then they died back. I'm not experienced enough to know if this is a natural cycle or something I did to them. They seem very hardy, and if I remember to pluck the old flower heads, will continue to bloom for quite a while.

I took a classic close-up of yellow crocuses, but I'm guessing that will be somewhat popular, this being early spring in the northern hemisphere. So I tried something a bit different. You'll have to use your imagination a little bit.

This is my cat Huck sitting in the window. Actually, he's sitting on the radiator in front of the window. He loves this spot. He sometimes pushes his head between the slats of the blinds so he can get a better view. He can peer out, watch the birds and squirrels and enjoy the warm, yellow sun. It's so warm and so yellow, when it reflects off him it even lights up the wood window frame with a golden glow. Not too shabby for a domestic short hair tiger tabby!
