I know there are fish in here...

A late afternoon visit to our Central Park's Iroquois Lake. Someone is on the look out for sunfish, which nest in the shallows and can often be seen by quietly peering over the edge.

Ducks

Late afternoon and the sun is shining on 'The Casino'. That building has been called the Casino all my life, and I've seen post cards of it looking much the same from the 1930s, but I never remember any gambling going on there. It's always been hot dogs and ice cream; that sort of thing. One can rent a paddleboat there, too.

We've had a heat wave, and the lake is shallow, so the water warmed up quickly. The aquatic plants have really been growing, so the surface of the water is dotted with the tops of them.

Twilight at the park

Calm evening, few bugs. We hung around. This isn't black and white, but it's pretty close.

Paddle boat

In Central Park, there is a small body of water I'd ordinarily call a pond, but its official title is Iroquois Lake. In the warm months, one can rent a paddle boat to go out into the lake. $4 for 2 people for a half hour; $6 for an hour. Strangely, I'd never been out on one, so the youngest and I decided to give it a whirl.

His steering was... erratic, as befits a nearly-7-year-old, I suppose. Full port or full starboard, nothing in between! He managed to navigate us to the fountain in the middle (fortunate wind shifts kept us mostly dry) as well as close to the wild ducks and geese who were paddling the lake independently of us.

Central Park's Iroquois Lake

I thought it might be interesting to put the camera down low to see the plants growing in the pond. I guess technically it's called Iroquois Lake, but I always called it the pond.

It's shallow, and heats up quickly. Water plants thrive in these conditions, and quickly fill the pond with growth.

I think the ducks and geese appreciate it, but the people who rent paddle boats may not.
