Fishing in Vale

One thing that's interesting: I've seen more people fishing down in Vale than there were before the construction.  There's a wide path down the south side of the east pond, and it makes it much nicer to set up.  You can cast without getting caught in the bushes and trees behind you.

I've seen carp, bass and sunfish in the pond.  The carp tend to school in the middle; the sunnies can be seen hovering over their nests in the shallows, and the bass hang out around the fallen trees.

Catch and release

Our 7-year old likes to go fishing. He's been experimenting with various bait; live and artificial. He caught several sunfish with crickets - he's convinced they're the best.

We practise catch and release fishing. After catching the fish, we unhook them and release them unharmed back into the water. He insisted that I show a photo of one of his catches swimming away but try as I might, I couldn't get an image of one swimming off - this was as close as I could get.

Fishing

Sometimes it seems that living with a 7 year-old is nothing but noise and movement - the energy the young possess can be overwhelming at times.

And sometimes there's peace.

By the bye, when we go fishing, we release the fish unharmed back into the water.

Bluegill

The youngest likes to go fishing and since we live so close to Central Park, that's a common destination for an hour or two of catch and release fun. This is one of his catches - a bluegill.

Bluegills nest quite close to the edge - they can be seen easily from shore. They also feed on just about any food like worms or bread. We haven't had any luck with artificial lures, but a bluegill will grab a worm in under 30 seconds.

Which is perfect for a soon-to-be 7 year-old!
