Green!

This little hollow in Vale always has this patch of green.  The plants look like wintergreen but they're not at all minty tasting so I think they're partridge berries.  I don't generally pick plants in the wild, but I might take some close-up photos for better identification.  I think it's cool that this little hollow has the first green down there.

Gold Moss sedum

It's also called biting stonecrop, but I think Gold Moss sounds so much better!  This is the second bit of green to appear in the garden, after the snow drops and crocus.  It's hardy stuff - it handles codl, ice, sun and rain in any amount that comes.  It is quite invasive, so I have to keep an eye on where it heads.  Don't want it to choke out the day lilies!

Edit: This is my 1000th post. I never imagined I would find a thousand photos. I owe a big thank you to the City Daily community for encouraging me.

Green Vale

There is so much brown; the weather has been hot and dry.  Lawns especially are brown, but even many gardens are looking as though they are missing a soaking rain.  But not down here, at the bottom of Vale.  The Cowhorn Creek is low, but it is still flowing, and the foliage is lush as a jungle here.  The cicadas are singing, bees flitting from flower to flower and the fish are snapping up small bugs that fly too close to the water.

I used the old Minolta 50mm lens for this; the camera couldn't record the F-stop, since it's completely mechanical.  I think it was F8.  I tried letting the camera decide on the shutter speed.  Not bad for auto-pilot!

Lamp post

This lovely green photo is intended to accompany the previous, red one.  These seem to be the traditional holiday colours after all!  This is the base of a lamp post downtown.  Each one has a small copy of the city's seal.  It's a sheaf of wheat enclosed in a shield shaped cartouche.  It says so in the City ordinances!

It's easy to be green!

A can of green spray-on hair colour is all it takes to become neon green.  Both parents thought that he wanted to be Frankenstein's monster, but no.  He just wanted to try having different coloured hair!  Maybe we'll repurpose that hair for tonight's trick-or-treating!!

Monthly theme day - The colour green

Each month, on the first, the City Daily Photo blogging community suggests a theme that all of us try to realise.  This month, the theme is the colour green. Click here to view thumbnails for all participants. The community is so talented, I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Around here, green is everywhere.  The rain has caused the earth to leap with verdant joy.  The grass is green, the fields are green and the trees are green.  This tree had its portrait taken while walking in Vale park, near my house.

Lock 8 dam gate

This is taken standing under the lock 8 dam on the Mohawk River.    During the summer, the spot I'm standing on would be under at least 15 feet of water, but in the winter time, the water is lower and solid!

This large chain is connected to a large axle that is connected to a very large motor that lifts the dam gates right off the river bed.  Every autumn the gates go up to let the ice pass, and every spring they come back down to impound the river and form a pool deep enough for barges to navigate.

Honestly, I didn't have anything else green to post for St Patrick's Day!
