This large chain is connected to a large axle that is connected to a very large motor that lifts the dam gates right off the river bed. Every autumn the gates go up to let the ice pass, and every spring they come back down to impound the river and form a pool deep enough for barges to navigate.
Honestly, I didn't have anything else green to post for St Patrick's Day!

ReplyDeleteHow can I not like a blog written by a viola player? (my son is a viola player)
ReplyDeleteThis must be one of the most unusual St Patrick's Day posts in the blogging world. We have just driven home from a school concert through Edinburgh city centre (10 pm), and the streets are thronged with people wearing all sorts of green clothes, hats and faces, celebrating.
Haha, thank you; it was something of a head scratcher to find green here this time of year. Perhaps next year I'll think ahead a little better...
ReplyDeleteI think it was very creative use of green for St. Patty's Day.
